Data and editorial methodology

Every data type has a preferred source, review cadence and presentation rule. This keeps static reference facts separate from time-sensitive market data.

Current coverage and data status

WSE contains 58 curated exchange profiles across 7 regions. National markets within a shared group are separate profiles. Technical segments, reporting facilities and other MIC entries remain in a separate identifier directory and do not increase the exchange count.

MIC codes, their operating/segment classification and registry status were checked on 10 September 2026 against the ISO publication dated 10 August 2026. This does not verify every other field. Session labels, operator references, regulators and index associations require field-level review. Market status and holiday dates come from each exchange’s official trading hours and calendar, and status is shown as unavailable wherever that calendar is not verified for the day. No live prices are published: index performance comes from Marketstack end-of-day data and is shown with its data date. The largest stock exchanges ranking uses monthly World Federation of Exchanges statistics, with every exchange measured at the same month-end.

Source hierarchy

  1. Official exchange, regulator or standards-body publication.
  2. Recognized industry organization, index provider or licensed data vendor.
  3. Reputable secondary source used only for context or cross-checking.

Exchange profiles

MIC, operator, regulator, hours, timezone, currency and official URL are stored as structured fields. Each field group records the source and a last-reviewed date. Material changes should be updated in the central data source so all directory and country pages remain consistent.

Market hours and holidays

Open/closed status is calculated in each exchange’s own timezone from its official regular hours, lunch breaks, holidays, half-days and special sessions. Public holidays are not enough on their own, and a missing holiday entry never proves an ordinary trading day: outside the period an exchange’s official calendar covers, status is unavailable. Auctions and product-specific sessions can differ from the regular hours shown.

Performance data

The site should describe index performance, not claim that an exchange itself rose or fell. Every value must identify the index, period, price or total-return basis, currency if relevant, timestamp and whether data is real-time, delayed or end-of-day.

Rankings

Each ranking must define the metric and reporting date. Market capitalization, listed companies and value traded are separate measurements. Exchange groups and individual venues must not be mixed without an explicit aggregation rule.

Corrections and review

Core profiles should be reviewed at least annually and whenever an operator, MIC or session schedule changes. Calendars and dynamic feeds require automated monitoring plus manual checks before publication.
