MIC codes explained

A Market Identifier Code is a four-character code used to identify exchanges, trading platforms and market segments in a standardized way.

What does MIC mean?

MIC stands for Market Identifier Code. ISO 10383 defines the standard and the official register is maintained through ISO's registration process.

Operating MIC and segment MIC

An operating MIC identifies the organization or main market operator. Segment MICs can identify specific markets or segments under that operator. The distinction matters when data refers to a particular venue rather than an exchange brand as a whole.

Examples

  • XNYS — New York Stock Exchange
  • XNAS — Nasdaq Stock Market
  • XLON — London Stock Exchange
  • XETR — Xetra

How WSE uses MICs

Each exchange profile displays the relevant primary MIC and links to the official ISO register through the source list. MIC pages should only be generated in production when they add unique, useful context and do not duplicate the exchange profile.
